What Is the Dryer Symbol on Clothes?

The main drying symbol is a square. A square with a circle inside means tumble drying. Dots inside the circle show the dryer heat level. Lines inside the square usually show an air-drying method, such as line dry, drip dry, or dry flat.

Tumble Dry Symbols Explained

The tumble dry symbol looks like a square with a circle inside. This is often the dryer safe symbol, but it does not always mean high heat is safe. Always check for dots, lines, or a cross before choosing a dryer setting.

What is the dryer safe symbol?

The basic dryer safe symbol is a square with a circle inside. It means tumble drying is allowed, but the safest setting still depends on dots, fabric type, and any extra label instructions.

What is the tumble dryer symbol?

The tumble dryer symbol is the same square-with-circle icon. One dot means low heat, two dots mean medium heat, and three dots mean high heat when the fabric allows it.

Dryer Heat Dots Explained

One dot: Use low heat. Best for polyester, activewear, stretch fabrics, and delicate items.
Two dots: Use medium heat when the care label and fabric allow it.
Three dots: High heat is allowed only when the garment label supports it.
No heat / air dry: Tumble without added heat if the label and machine setting allow it.

No Dryer Symbol Explained

The no dryer symbol, also called the do not tumble dry symbol, usually looks like the tumble dry icon with an X through it. This means the item should not go in the dryer.

The symbol for no tumble dryer is common on clothes that can shrink, stretch, melt, lose shape, or get damaged by heat. Use the air-drying instruction on the label, or choose a gentle drying method if the label is unclear.

High-risk fabrics Wool, rayon, viscose, activewear, polyester blends, elastic fabrics, lace, delicate knits, and structured garments.

Air Drying Symbols

Air drying symbols use a square with lines inside. These are important when dryer heat is not recommended.

Line dryHang the item on a line or drying rack.
Drip dryHang while wet and let water drip out. Do not wring unless allowed.
Dry flatLay flat on a towel or rack. Best for knits, sweaters, and wool.
Dry in shadeDry away from direct sun to protect darks and prints.
Line dry in shadeHang to dry, but keep out of direct sunlight.
Drip dry in shadeHang wet in a shaded, ventilated area.
Dry flat in shadeLay flat and keep away from direct sunlight.
Do not wringPress water out gently instead of twisting the fabric.

Permanent Press and Gentle Dryer Symbols

Some tumble dry symbols have one or two lines under them. These lines usually mean the item needs a gentler dryer cycle.

One line under dryer symbol

This usually points to permanent press or reduced action drying. Use a lower-stress dryer cycle and avoid overdrying.

Two lines under dryer symbol

This means gentle or delicate drying. Use the lowest safe heat, a shorter cycle, or air drying when the fabric is sensitive.

Dryer Symbols by Fabric Type

Polyester Use low heat or air dry. Polyester can hold body oil and odor, and dryer heat can make odor harder to remove. Polyester care guide
Activewear Avoid high heat. Stretch fibers and performance finishes can weaken, lose shape, or trap odor.
Wool Do not use dryer heat unless the care label clearly allows it. Wool can shrink or felt.
Rayon / Viscose Air drying is usually safer because these fabrics can shrink, stretch, or lose shape.
Cotton Cotton often handles drying better than delicate fabrics, but high heat can still shrink it.
Towels Towels need full drying to prevent musty smell, but heavy fabric softener can reduce absorbency.

Complete the Care Label Check

Dryer symbols only explain the drying part of the label. If your garment also has wash tub icons, water temperature numbers, hand wash marks, or cycle lines, check the washing symbols guide before choosing a washer cycle.

Common Dryer Symbol Mistakes

Using high heat just because clothes feel thick or dirty.
Putting odor-heavy polyester, gym clothes, or musty laundry in the dryer too soon.
Hanging sweaters or heavy wet knits when the label says dry flat.
Ignoring shade drying on dark, printed, or delicate clothes.
Overdrying elastic, synthetic, or delicate items.

Washer or Dryer Machine Symbols Are Different

Some people search for dryer symbols because they see icons on a Samsung, LG, Bosch, Beko, or Whirlpool dryer display. Those machine icons are different from clothing care label symbols.

This guide explains dryer symbols on clothes care labels. For appliance display icons, check your machine manual because each brand uses its own cycle, alert, filter, and drying-level symbols.
